Marcelle Lee Appointed Board President of the Women’s Society of Cyberjutsu

Arlington, VA — January 26, 2026 — The Women’s Society of Cyberjutsu (WSC) proudly announces the appointment of Marcelle Lee as its new Board President, marking a significant milestone as the organization continues its mission to advance technical excellence, leadership, and community within cybersecurity.

Marcelle Lee is a security researcher, educator, and self-described packet nerd, widely recognized for her deep technical expertise and long-standing commitment to the cybersecurity community. She is an active Capture the Flag (CTF) builder and player and a strong advocate for hands-on, skills-based learning.

Marcelle currently serves as Principal Cybersecurity Advisor at Fractal Security Group, LLC, where she has provided strategic cybersecurity guidance as a consultant since 2014. In this role, she advises organizations on security architecture, threat analysis, and risk management, drawing on more than a decade of real-world experience.

In addition to her advisory work, Marcelle is Adjunct Faculty in Cybersecurity at the University of Maryland Global Campus, where she has taught since 2018, specializing in digital forensics and network security.

Marcelle has been actively involved with the Women’s Society of Cyberjutsu since 2013, serving as a Board Member for more than a decade before assuming the role of Board President. She is also engaged with numerous industry organizations and advisory groups, including the NIST Cyber Competitions Working Group, the Cybersecurity Association of Maryland Advisory Council, and the AKYLADE® Advisory Council, beginning in 2024.

Her professional accomplishments are supported by an extensive list of industry certifications, including CISSP, CSX-P, GCFA, GCIA, GCIH, GPEN, GISF, GSEC, GCCC, C|EH, CCNA, PenTest+, Security+, Network+, and ACE. She holds four academic degrees, including a master’s degree in cybersecurity.

Marcelle’s leadership and service have earned her multiple honors, including the Chesapeake Regional Tech Council Women in Tech (WIT) Award and the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Women’s Society of Cyberjutsu. She is a frequent conference speaker and trainer and remains an active volunteer dedicated to mentoring and developing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.

VA Cyber Skills Academies Open to Reskill and Upskill Individuals Economically Impacted for Cybersecurity Jobs

RESTON, Va., April 20, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Women's Society of Cyberjutsu (WSC) announces a workforce program, Virginia Cyber Skills Academies (VCSA), which provides reskilling and upskilling in cybersecurity to individuals in Northern Virginia whose livelihood was impacted by COVID-19. This project was funded in part by GO VIRGINIA, a state-funded initiative administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) that strengthens and diversifies Virginia's economy and fosters the creation of higher wage jobs in strategic industries.

The Virginia Economic Commission announced that Virginia had a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 5.1% as of March 26, 2021. Many industries such as retail, hospitality, and travel were hit especially hard with slower recovery rates than other sectors. However, the demand for cybersecurity professionals continues to see an increase. Q2 2020 saw an 11% year-over-year increase in cybersecurity positions, despite COVID-19 (Dice, Q2 Tech Report). The shift to remote work because of COVID-19 has compounded the need for trained cybersecurity professionals as cyberattacks have increased.

The program is composed of two academies: The Reskilling Academy is for individuals who have no background in cybersecurity and trains those individuals for key industry certifications that qualify them for mission critical jobs. The Upskilling Academy assists those with some IT background or security-specific experience to learn the additional skills needed to find more advanced roles, exposing them to even more job opportunities. Graduates of this program will not only fill a need in the local economy but also increase their long-term earning potential.

This state-sponsored program will provide technical skills training, industry recognized certifications, mentorship, and soft skills to individuals living in Virginia Region 7 (Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park; and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William). Selected students will go through all training virtually and as part of a cohort with like-minded peers. Applicants will submit resumes, complete an assessment, interview, and submit application documents, to verify their eligibility for this program.

Funding to support workforce development, site development and infrastructure, entrepreneurial ecosystems, and COVID-19 recovery efforts

RICHMOND—Governor Ralph Northam today announced an allocation of more than $6.3 million in Growth and Opportunity for Virginia (GO Virginia) grants to help the Commonwealth continue addressing the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This funding will support a total of 15 projects, including eight regional GO Virginia projects and seven projects through GO Virginia’s Economic Resilience and Recovery Program.

“This funding will go a long way towards supporting a broad-based economic recovery across our Commonwealth,” said Governor Northam. “As we celebrate these projects, we must also recognize the leadership and many contributions of the late GO Virginia Board Chairman Tom Farrell, whose business acumen helped advance the GO Virginia mission of fostering lasting regional collaboration, and was instrumental in mounting a robust effort to spur Virginia’s economic recovery amid the pandemic. His legacy will live on through innovative, impactful programs like this one.”

The projects receiving funds will provide additional capacity to expand workforce development and talent pipelines in key industries, support the growth of startup businesses and entrepreneurial ecosystems, grow Virginia’s portfolio of business-ready sites, and assist regions with mitigating the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The awards will leverage an additional $5.6 million in local and other non-state resources to assist with ongoing economic diversification and growth efforts throughout Virginia.

Together with multiple partners, Appalachian Voices will execute a strategy to build a new, high-wage industry cluster around energy storage electrification. The project will also provide technical assistance to existing manufacturers as they diversify and expand sales into these new markets.

Region 2: Montgomery County and the city of Roanoke

The Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center (VTCRC) will develop a market study, conceptual design, and associated operational plan to support the life science ecosystem in Blacksburg and Roanoke with flexible laboratory space. Region 4: Counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex and the cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, and Petersburg

The Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing, in partnership with Richard Bland College, will establish a Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) chapter in Virginia and launch an Advanced Manufacturing Technician program. Funding will support the development of new hands-on learning space for advanced manufacturing and new training capacity for jobs that are in high demand by area manufacturers.

The Shenandoah Valley Partnership will lead an effort to advance six regionally significant sites, totaling 1,112 acres, for potential new or expanding businesses in the region’s targeted industries.

The Virginia Restaurant, Lodging, and Travel Association will support the restaurant and hospitality industry by offering COVID-related skills training to unemployed and underemployed restaurant and hotel workers. This initiative will also further develop an industry-specific job board to support ongoing industry recovery efforts.

Region 4: County of Prince George and the city of Hopewell

The College of Engineering and Technology at Virginia State University will create an internship program to support regional manufacturing companies impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the course of a semester, interns will develop projects focused on a company’s specific needs related to economic distress brought on by the pandemic, while also getting the hands-on experience needed to round out their degrees.

Tidewater Community College’s Marine Trades Training Program will expand its welding and marine coatings programs at the Skilled Trades Academy in Portsmouth. Common Grain Alliance (CGA) will provide support and build cooperative relationships between farmers, local producers, and distributors impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project will leverage existing web-based applications with an online marketplace to increase sales and enhance the resiliency of the industry through the creation of an online platform to facilitate supply chain logistics and new technology to streamline food sales, storage access, and distribution.

Region 9: Counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Louisa, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock, and the city of Charlottesville

The Central Virginia Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will address growth challenges and improve economic resiliency among area businesses by enhancing firms’ digital presence and e-commerce capabilities. Additionally, this funding will help increase SBDC’s capacity to serve the region’s business development needs, emphasizing services to rural and under-resourced communities.

Arlington VA - July 2020 - As June 20th approached the Cyberjutsu Con team would spend the last remaining hours putting the final touches on what would be the Women's Society of Cyberjutsu's very first conference, virtually! For 7 years, the leadership team of WSC has discussed and visualized a conference like no other. Hands-on training, lots of networking, competitions, and community. This vision finally came to fruition thanks to COVID-19 flipping the world on it's head. We realized this was the perfect time to bring the #cyberjutsutribe together to build their skills and grow their networks. And thats what happened. 

The day started with an inspirational message from CEO, Mari Galloway and a keynote from Caroline Wong where she shared her amazing journey into cyber and tech. By 9 am attendees found their first sessions whether it was Configuring your Python Arsnel with Joy Huggins, hearing from Googlers about building your brand and community in cyber or learning about Google Cloud Platform with Dominique West. There was something for everyone.

"We wanted the conference to have a little bit of everything, from offensive security to defensive security as well as talks about brand, building and different options in cyber, like ICS and using Game Theory for targeting advisary's", said Mari Galloway, CEO of Women's Society of Cyberjutsu. 

Having a variety of topics allowed everyone to find something of interest during the event. 

"There were so many great sessions. If we can make this a two day event, it would great. I wish I could be two places at once most of the day," said an attendee of the conference.

For those interested in playing a CTF, Trend Micro hosted their CTF on Discord with about 50 people playing. Participants were broken into teams to brush up on their defensive skills while learning more about Trend Micro products. Trend Micro provided a variety of gifts to the winning team. Closing out the event was ISSA International President Candy Alexander, our Happy Hour Keynote, who discussed the importance of diverse teams not only based on gender and race but also on educational background, cultural upbringing, disability, and more. Candy also announced our new partnership with ISSA to increase membership for both organizations. Stay tuned for details!

All in all the goal of bringing the #cyberjutsutribe together for a day of learning and fun was a success.

The Wicked6 fundraiser and exhibition invites cybersecurity professionals from around the world to experience live cyber competitions as a player, sponsor, or avid fan. Circadence is aligned with the event’s goals: to raise funds for the Women’s Society of Cyberjutsu for cybersecurity training of women and girls, as well as to demonstrate how cyber games are as exciting as physical sports. This cyber competition will raise awareness of cybersecurity skills and careers and also aligns with the recent executive order to increase this country’s cyber workforce.

Wicked6 chose Project Ares as the cybersecurity team competition platform due to its immersive, gamified environment. It takes cyber skill exercises out of the classroom and into real-world cyberattack scenarios inspired by real-life breaches and threats. An industry-leading, cloud-based, patented cyber range, Project Ares is designed for any skill-level cyber professional to grow competencies in cybersecurity governance, offense, and defense. Leading up to the Grand Finale in Las Vegas, competitors will practice and qualify in battle room exercises to hone specific skill sets aligned to NICE/NIST Framework that underpins the new White House Executive Order about cybersecurity workforce development. They will also be able to access missions, full-scale cybersecurity scenarios designed for individuals and teams to problem-solve system issues in various settings from banks, to hospital networks, to water treatment plants.

The competition will kick off in May 2019 with eager, collegiate cyber teams competing for a chance to show off their skills in a live, Grand Finale event. The top six elite teams after the qualifying round will go head-to-head during the live event onstage in Las Vegas.

RESTON, Va., April 16, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Today, the Women’s Society of Cyberjutsu announces the Wicked6 Cyber Games, a cybersecurity exhibition and fundraiser to be held at HyperX Esports Arena Las Vegas at the Luxor Hotel and Casino on August 8, 2019 followed by the 6th Annual Cyberjutsu Women’s Awards Reception.

In this exciting setting, purpose-built for online gaming, the Wicked6 Cyber Games takes its lead from the esports world. Six collegiate teams will compete head-to-head in preliminary, semi-final and championship rounds in an arena before an audience of avid fans in the presence of major fundraising supporters.

“As the demand for cybersecurity talent continues to grow, it is critical to provide a fun and engaging platform for competitors to hone their skills and showcase their talents to potential employers,” said Mari Galloway, CEO of the Women’s Society of Cyberjutsu. “Wicked6 will demonstrate how exciting cybersecurity can be and raise awareness of the profession.”

Competitors will demonstrate ethical hacking skills in realistic simulations of industry-specific scenarios, like protecting a financial institution or defending a power grid, on a state-of-the-art platform designed to gamify cybersecurity.
